A lot of thought, planning and effort goes into creating your website. You shouldn’t skimp when it comes to hosting your website online. With hundreds or thousands of web hosts vying for your money, you have to weigh all the options. We examine EGIHosting in this review and find out what they offer.

If you are looking for a high-end server to host your premium website, EGIHosting might just be your answer. The hosting company doesn't offer low-end, or shared hosting plans and instead focuses on the high-end development of the internet infrastructure.

If you are just starting out as a website designer or don’t need a fancy site with dedicated server capabilities, EGI is not going to work for you. However, there are a lot of niche applications and sites that require specialized services that EGI may be able to help with.

This review will dive into the hosting company, their history and track record as well as the services they do offer. Let’s find out if EGI is a choice for you to consider.

What is Web Hosting?

In a basic nutshell, web hosting is a series of computers that hold your website data and deliver send-and-receive requests from web browsers.

Think of it like this: Every website has what is called an Internet Protocol address, also known as an IP address. This IP is unique to the website and the server hosting it. It works similar to your home address.

Your home has the only address of its kind. You may live on main street, and your address may be “1234.” While there may be other 1234 Main Street homes, yours is the only one in your city, state and zip code. The entire address allows mail and other services to arrive at your door and not a similar address three states away.

A web address is the same thing. Except instead of a street, city, state and zip code, it uses what is known as a dotted quad. A series of four numbers separated by dots. For example, google.com has a dotted quad IP address of 172.217.2.46. This is the only website in the entire internet with this series of numbers.

The name “google.com” is a human translation of this IP address. In fact, you can enter either “google.com” or the IP address “172.217.2.46” into your browsers address bar and reach the same page.

When your website is hosted on a server, all of the files, directories and scripting are stored on a hard drive. The area of the hard drive where your files are located will have an IP address so web browsers can find it, retrieve information and display it to your site visitors on their home computers.

The server is a special hard drive that uses server-side scripting such as PHP, SQL, and others to send the information to be displayed. All other components of a server are similar to your home computer. They have memory, transfer rates, storage capacities, processors and cabling.

A web host like EGI, then, is a company that maintains and installs these large computers in a server room. When you sign up for their services, they allow you to rent a hard drive or part of a hard drive in their server racks for your website.

You pay a weekly, monthly or yearly fee for them to store and update your information.

Every web host will have a similar setup, though they will offer different features to gain your use. Shared hosting, virtual private servers (VPS) and dedicated servers are all various types of web hosting.

Shared hosting uses a single hard drive to host many websites. They will share an IP address, with a single determiner set by the hosting company to show only your specific portion of the hard drive.

VPS, on the other hand, work like a hybrid between shared and dedicated servers. A VPS appears to be a single hard drive per website, though there can be several sites on the same drive.

Dedicated servers are the most expensive as they host one website per server. You get the most storage space, bandwidth and memory the company can offer, without having to share the hard drive with another website.

These variations, or service plans, will cost different amounts to rent and come with various features. If you are a server developer, for example, you can get a blank drive on a dedicated server that allows you to do every bit of programming from the server side to the front end. This is known as unmonitored server hosting.

Monitored hosting means that the web host sets up the server, installs and maintains the server-side programming and you just add your files and website scripting to the drive while they handle the back-end information.

What Services does EGIHosting Offer?

EGI Hosting only caters to premium content and doesn’t offer lower end hosting services like shared hosting. Instead, they have multiple plans that are on dedicated servers only. Each of the plans comes with various degrees of storage space, memory, and bandwidth. They have a monthly cost for each one ranging in pricing from $125 to $400 per month.

There are three plans for managed hosting: Intel E3, Intel E5 Single and Intel E5 Dual.

Intel E3

The E3 plan is a basic dedicated server that offers EGI’s uptime promise and fully managed server configuration. Along with the server and hosting plan, you will receive:

  • 8 CPU threads (8x3.4GHz)
  • 16GB RAM
  • 1TB hard drive disc space
  • 10TB transfer bandwidth
  • 1000 Mbps port
  • IPMI
  • DDoS Protection

The configuration will cost you $125 per month on a month to month basis with a 30 day cancellation period.

The E5 Single

The E5 Single plan is similar to the E3 in regards to the fully managed server configuration with the uptime and responsiveness promises.

  • 12 CPU threads (12x2.0GHz)
  • 32GB RAM
  • 1TB hard drive disc space
  • 10TB transfer bandwidth
  • 1000 Mbps port
  • IPMI
  • DDoS Protection

This plan will cost you $299 per month, again with the 30-day cancellation policy included for new and existing customers.

The E5 Dual

The E5 Dual is the highest plan available with the most space and speed. Dedication to the servers is paramount for EGI, and it is reflected in this service.

  • 24 CPU threads (24x2.0 GHz)
  • 64GB RAM
  • 1TB hard drive disc space
  • 10TB transfer bandwidth
  • 1000 Mbps port
  • IPMI
  • DDoS Protection

This plan will cost you $299 per month, again with the 30-day cancellation policy included for new and existing customers.

Non-Monitored Server Plans

EGI specializes in custom dedicated server plans without being fully managed. Depending on the needs of your business, EGI can custom build a server to meet your requirements. They list several options and their pricing for their unmonitored servers, which is just a sampling of their abilities.

You are encouraged to contact the sales team to discuss your options and needs and format a custom plan tailored for you.

In most cases unmonitored, or as EGI calls them “Bare Metal” servers, will cost you anywhere between $125 per month up to $300 per month. You can view their bare metal server plan page for current and up to date information.

EGI has several other services centered around web hosting. Larger corporations and businesses will enjoy colocation services.

Colocation

A service where you rent rack space for servers you already own. A rack can be leased or rented through EGI in almost any set up amount. A full rack (45U) can be rented for your entire company or business. You will have access to 27 IPv4 addresses as well as managed services from EGI.

If you don’t need a whole rack, you can purchase a half-rack or a single node (1U). Pricing will depend on availability, contract rental length and various other factors such as location. EGI has three colocation server locations: California, Florida and Switzerland.

SHOUTcast Steaming

You can see the various plans here., SHOUTcast is a great way to get your audio files heard, podcasts joined and customers interested. EGI offers superior SHOUTcast services including:

Webcasting (streaming audio online)

A free service provided by NullSoft through SHOUTcast DNAS. However, you will need a server to host your files, and pay for bitrate quality, slots for visitors to listen from and other media required services.

EGI has some of the best pricing and most reliable uptime of any webcasting service provider.

Dedicated Engineers on Staff

Part of the response plan for maintenance, emergency response and customer care is a dedicated team of network and server engineers. They are available around the clock every day of the year and will assist you as needed.

If your server, node or drive has problems they will be on site to handle the issue. Most issues are resolved in less than an hour because of the on-site teams. Other, more intensive issues are handled as fast as possible without data loss.

The datacenter engineers offer some of the best industry professionals that can give you:

  • Well over a decade of experience.
  • Configuration and design assistance with your network.
  • Housing and software solutions to meet your needs.
  • Troubleshooting for virtually any and all hardware and software issues.
  • Operating System configuration.

As with anything else, though, we are dealing with electronic equipment. No promise can be made by anyone that everything will be saved or recovered. Equipment fails from time to time. It is just part of the game.

However, you will be required to make your own backups. You can do this locally, through Cron jobs or Shell access, or remotely, saving to your personal computer or another server. EGI does not offer backup services.

Public Review

Most companies that use EGI have only great things to say about the company as a whole and the services they offer.

As with any customer-based service, there will be complaints and problems. One of the most common issues that crop up with EGI is that there is no live phone support. If you have an issue that needs to be addressed, you will have to contact EGI through their contact form or support email.

Replies are usually quick, reporting closure of issues within 48 to 72 hours. However, if the issue is critical, this may not be fast enough for your business.

Offering lower-tired plans would also please some customers that love the dedication and services provided but want a smaller or less feature-filled option to get started with.

Mostly, though, there aren’t enough good things to say about the company, and the servers used to host their clients’ websites.

In Conclusion

Since 2003, EGIHosting has provided dedicated server hosting plans for the premium clientele that they cater to. If your business is in need of a dedicated server, either fully managed or “Bare Metal,” EGI is worth a look.

They have plans for every need and will take the time to custom build a server to your exact specifications. The pricing will vary depending on your needs, the amount of disc space, bandwidth and memory required.

With a high satisfaction rating, EGI continues to push the envelope of what dedicated servers should be and how their customers are treated. It wouldn’t hurt to have a dedicated phone line for customer support, which may be implemented in the future.

For now, you will have to rely on digital communications, which isn’t a problem for most of us. In the end, there are hundreds of similar companies to browse through, but EGI makes the process simple and hassle-free.
